I have shared much about Microsoft's new Bing iPad application and Bing Business Portal that it launched two days back. But today, its about Windows 7 that has surpassed the usage of Windows XP in United States, as reported by StatCounter, a Web Analytics firm. Huh?
Until the launch of Windows 7 two years back, Windows XP was the highly used Windows version. But after Window 7 landed on the charts, Microsoft sold its licenses that numbered 300 million and more. Till the much grown frenzy for Windows 7, XP maintained its position and played really well with much faithful user-audience.
Strangely, within short duration of time, Windows 7 is cutting into territory of Windows XP.
As reported by StatCounter on Monday, figures of Windows 7 usage over desktops in North America has amplified against XP, though slightly. The count of Windows 7 is only 32.5% of all operating systems according to the latest measurements. In contrast to Windows 7, XP's usage percentage is 32.4%. There is not much difference between the two; however, we can expect Windows 7 to top the charts soon.
Nevertheless, the reason behind Windows XP waning is evident as Microsoft declared in recent years that its days are numbered. As an exception, Microsoft cuts availability to desktop makers for shipment of systems with XP pre-installed. In addition to this, the technical support that was made available for XP Service Pack 3 is no longer active, with all extended support lapsed- free security, bug patches and paid per incident support is set for expiry in April 2014.
With Microsoft's attempt to keep customers away from Windows XP is the reason that its market experienced downfall.
For instance, the use of XP in North America dropped from 69 % in the year 2008. From late 2009, when Windows7 entered, its share has increased from zero to 32% today. On the other hand, Windows Vista was high in demand in 2007 when Windows 7 gathered 31.9% share. And it was after this that the share of Windows Vista reduced to 19.6% as shown by StatCounter.
However, there is a less probability of current trends to witness a shift soon.
The company began shipping Windows 7 Service Pack 1 in February, another milestone for which IT customers have been waiting for prior to picking Windows newer version.
Also, Microsoft is soon to provide updates about the number of Windows 7 license copies that have been sold.
