Send Newsletters

• Build brand awareness
• Get new customers
• Send product reminders
• Act as an extension of marketing strategies

What The C.R.A.P.!

Hi,

If you aren’t already offended, let me tell you… I was talking about your website.

Offended now …eh?

But you know what… Its not all that bad, especially so when you what C.R.A.P. stands for.

C.R.A.P or Contrast- Repetition- Alignment- Proximity is a favorite buzzword in the world of  professional web designing and when someone tells you that throws the acronym at you, its just an affirmation that your website is swinging the right way.

And what it comprises of defines the four fundamental features of great website designs

Contrast
When Black and White mix together, there remains no black and there is no white.
The same ways, when different elements are kept together, there is no difference left to see.
Keeping a good contrast between elements of the web page makes them noticeable instead of creating a sea of similarity that’s totally uncommunicative. Good contrast gets you a crisp and well structured website whereas poor contrast gets you a bland blend of RGB values.

Repetition
While I wont comment on my neighbor’s newly renovated flat where he has made sure each room makes you feel like you have entered a new planet altogether, for the web world I hold strong to the belief that consistency is an essential.
Repeating styles on all the pages of your website gets you this. Like in weblogs, try to keep the page elements same throughout like header graphics, main columns, data and comment headings etc.
It makes visitors feel at home and they are able to identify with the environment therein.

Alignment
Everything on the web page should be in flow with something else. Nothing should be like the odd one out!
i maintain that quality alignment is the hallmark of good web design. Its easy… really. Just line up things and make sure that the padding around the elements is symmetrical and relative to their sizing.
Here are some rules of alignment:
• Either align left or align right. But never use both of them together
• Don’t center-align the body of the content on the web page
• Use existing hard edges to line up other elements

Proximity
Birds of the same feather should flock together.

Proximity creates relativity between elements. Therefore elements that can be tagged by the same category should be grouped together. Users would sure find it easier to browse through and find stuff. But in addition, the structure of your website will be far more organized than it ever was.

So there you are. Work on your website and make a shift from crap to C.R.A.P.!

Designers' Block- Unblocked!

Clogged –clogged-clogged.
If that’s how your mind responds when you press for fresh ideas, congratulations!

You have just met the Designers’ block.

(Yeah, it comes from the writers’ block)

Everyone who has been in those designing shoes for quite a while knows how it is to suddenly get blocked in the middle of a designing job and the mind refuses to let out anything. Let me tell you how to get out of that mess.

Design from the inside out
This is one of my best-kept secrets.
I’ve seen quite a many custom website designers starting with the header and then getting onto the page. Tell me something. When you have a party to attend, do start dressing with the necktie on first?
If that looks silly to you, it’s like the same with the header start. The page is more important. Work on the elements of the page first. This will give you a solid platform to work on!

Sketch-Sketch-Scribble
Get hold of a pencil and paper and do what you did in kindergarten. Sketch out a rough draft of what you’d like the site to look like. If there is something amiss, just scribble it off and sketch out a new one. Do this at least 10 times. By then you will have a clear picture of what to do.

Seek inspiration offline
There may be innumerable CSS galleries and design showcases out there, but give then a break. Take your eyes off the computer screen and look around. Nature abounds in color and does your immediate environment. Be it newspapers, magazines, cartons, just anything can do the job of instant inspiration.

Letting Go of Things
It does hurt to let things go but in some cases, it hurts more to let them stay. Especially so here.
Now you might have slogged really hard to design that amazing button and struggled more to make it look ‘right’ on the website. However, inspite of all your attempts, if is not happening, get the message clear. It doesn’t belong there! Just let it go…

Step away from the computer
If you are stuck, and really so, in the middle of the design process and just about nothing seems to work, take a break.
Give the design some time and space and go take a walk. You’d be surprised when you come back to it after some days. You’ll have a fresh new outlook altogether.

Don't be a one-hit-wonder
It worked great the first time and you have an easy hand for it too. But that doesn’t mean you use the style over and over again. Repetition kills creativity! Think out of the box and try out new designs.

Well… here they are! Useful tips to get you out when calamity strikes. Let me know how it went…

Bye for now!

What If Not The Traditional Navigation?

Hi,

This was one of our recent projects of website design. The client had a huge website that with counts and counts of pages that he wanted to organize in a structured format. There was no way a traditional navigation bar could be assigned to the website (considering the size and layers of the site) so we had to brainstorm our heads to come out with some alternate methods that’ll make it easier for users to make use of the information therein.

Here is what we came out with:

Say Search Box!
The database of his website had literally outgrown the limits of any hierarchal structure that might be assigned and the traffic inflow was dipping down because users were getting lost in the structure.
It was critical that we take quick action and retain helpless visitors from straying away.
The solution: Give them what they need!
How’s that?
We got a search box placed on the homepage of the website.
This way, whatever was it that the visitors were searching for, was at their fingertips!
Minus the need of navigating further inwards…

Caveat: if you are trying to do something like this, make sure to place your search box in an easily visible place and make it really “easily visible”

Relate the Relatives!
Next step was related links!
We set up a ‘Related Links’ box on the search results page. This box displayed links to all the content that was relevantly related to the item searched for. This spurns up choices for the users that might interest them.

Like if you are a researcher searching something about the Vietnam War, wouldn’t it be great to have links to other works on the same or resources referred to by other researchers?

Crumbs of Bread!
Next came my favorite- Breadcrumbs!
This sure does come from the Hansel and Gretel story but unlike their tale, you can completely rely on the crumbs here.

We incorporated breadcrumb navigation all over the website. This meant, wherever the users wandered to, they had a thread to follow back. Users now had a clear visual map of where on the site structure they are and what route they had taken.

Caveat: If you think the back button on your browser serves the same purpose, you sure are right, but let me tell you, a chuck of internet population is unaware that back button can go back multiple stages

Tag a Tag
Ever played the Tag game?
It’s no different here.
What we did was simple. Use an application to tag all the birds of same feather together!
I mean all the documents that fell under the same category were tagged under a common tag.
This way, if users want something related to a specific topic, the website opened up all that it had for that!

And voila… When we were done the site sure was a light-year ahead of what it was before!

Go ahead… If you have something like this, you know what you have to do. And yeah you think I have missed out on some ‘non-hierarchical’ methods of navigation… tell me about it…

‘Know Thy Users, For They Are Not You!’

Hi,

Q: What’s the purpose of your website?

A: Get you business, you say.

Q: Who gets you the business?

A: Users!

Q: So, then whet should be the purpose of your website?

A: To please the users!

Ain’t it?

But even then, I see so many web designers creating websites as if they were decorating their bedrooms.
Wake up! You just don’t add that images of lilies there just because you love the flower. It all about your VISITORS and what THEY like! And don’t assume that they’ll share your tastes everywhere.

Whenever I start a design project, the first thing I do is imagine a potential user. For my last project, my pseudo friend was Sara. Now Sara is a finance broker, all busy with her work. Amidst client meetings, stringent deadlines, heaps of paperwork, she can afford very little time to check out lending firms online.

Most designers make the mistake of thinking that users like Sara will give their undivided attention to the website. Now let’s be realistic here.

• Sara has got but a little time to spend online. And then she has her favorite sites marked too. So, you will need to rob time off those sites. And if you are no different from the ones she is already surfing, chances are bleak Sara will visit you again.

• Sara has a defined goal. When she visits a new site, she usually scans through the text in search of her desired words and phrases and if she doesn’t find them, she just moves on.

• Sara has too many things going on in her mind. She is distracted. So if your site doesn’t have clearly laid out with words that are familiar to her, she will lose interested and feel frustrated.

• Sara doesn't use or even know the jargon you do and does not care enough for how your company has evolved over the years. What she wants to know is can you be of use to her?

Remember always give visitors what they are looking for, not what you want to look at. Avoid being that nasty salesman who tries to sell everything under the sun but doesn’t get you what you asked for.

I often see clients who just want to load everything that pleases their eyes on their website. And then they want to please everyone. The result: the websites are completely off-target.

Your audiences out there are all Saras. They want clear and concise websites that let them achieve their goals, are resonant with their tasks and let the get in and get out quickly, the way a well-designed convenience store does.

Think about it! Whom do you listen to? Your staff that have enough experience in making sites or your audience whom you really target?

Map Thy Site!

Hi,

You decide to visit some new place and are exploring the terrains there.

You drive on the roads and pass through the lanes until you realize you are LOST!

What do you do???

Take out a map and look where you are!

Does it ring a bell?

Yeah… The story is no different for websites.

Visitors often visit your website and in between their browsing expeditions tend to get lost. And sometimes don’t even find what they are looking for.

Breadcrumbs you say?

But what about websites that are huge on size? The crumbs won’t extend that long…
And the search tool gets you to very specific content!
But how about sitemaps?

Sitemaps contain details of its website pages arranged in a hierarchical order. It also defines the basic information architecture of the entire website.
They are the map by which you can explore the website.

And they come with a whole lot of other benefits too…

Retaining Visitors
When visitors get lost on your website, they don’t usually wait and sent in feedbacks. They find it easier to move to another website, presumably that of your competitors, to search for what they want.
And in the online business market, losing visitors can be a huge huge loss.
Sitemaps are a happy recluse for such lost visitors to figure out where they want to go and do so efficiently.

Giving directions
You think it is the homepage? But trust me… Sitemaps are much more efficient in giving directions to people and sending them where they want to be.
Homepage only contains the main links for all the corresponding pages but the sitemap has details about all the sub pages as well.

Pleasing search engines
And then the search engines! Sitemaps are their swell kids.
Sitemaps tell search engine what pages of the website are important and how often fresh content is added to them. This helps search engines to plan out crawling schedules for them.

So, now you know how important they are. So go ahead… get started and make a map for your website! A professional webiste design is incomplete without it!

And how to go about making them… I’ll tell you about it next week…

Blog Away Your Blues…

Hi,

What’s the best way to make people know how smart you are?

Speak up!

Yes, only when they know what you know, will they invest their trust and faith in you. And what's the best way to speak up?

Blogging!!

You won’t believe how much this blog has helped me climb up the search engine rankings. In fact, I am of the opinion that blogs are the most effective means to communicate with your audience.

Like, ok. if you have a website development company and have a site for the same, it would list facts about your company, all the realms of services and so on. But every other website does the same. What business doesn’t preach good stuff about itself?

So how do say then, that you are the best of the lot? (Except using phrases like industry leaders, top most, first ever and all that, which again every website has on)

Blogs are the way to go. Blogs aren’t blatant advertisements or promotions of oneself. Rather, it’s an account you maintain where you get personal with your users. You can share with them your experience of the industry, review the trends and technologies of the industry, tell them what you are working on right now and what’s going on in your company and so on…

On the whole, readers get a picture of how much you know about the industry and how good you are at your work. Moreover, they know it is a real person speaking; they tend to trust you more. Also, blogs are an excellent means to share non-formal stuff that you can put on your website. Like, interesting anecdotes about the projects that you handle and stuff like that.

So you see, blogs can be a real powerful tool for you to talk with your audience and earn the credibility label. So go ahead, there is no stopping now. Blog all the way to success.

But yeah... do take care to do it correctly. Here are some valuable tips:

Make sure you update the ‘about us’ and ‘contact us’ page of your blog and fill it up with interesting content.

Include a sitemap in the blog so that the search engines can crawl all the pages faster and more easily.

All the links within the blog should be working appropriately.

The blog should contain quality content. Visitors should enjoy reading through and also gain some knowledge out it. The introductory post of the blog should welcome the audience and tell them about you and your company.

Before you launch the blog, have at least 5-6 posts ready beforehand so that you can maintain a flow. Also, after you are through writing a few posts you will become more comfortable with the process.

What Does Your E-commerce Site Need?

E-commerce sites are the new shopping malls of cyberspace. With more and more internet users shedding of their skepticism about making online purchases, the world of e-commerce is on an all-time high.

But what makes for a really great shopping experience? A site that lets you have one of course! And how do you make one? Let me tell you some features that go in the making of a successful e-commerce website.

‘You Are Here’
You see that thing everywhere, on route maps, amusement parks and malls. And are not relieved by that knowledge?
Well… the same goes in your website too. People visiting your site don’t know the ways around. Don’t let them get lost and make sure you have a headlines and breadcrumbs on the pages.
Something like Home > Category > Sub-cat > Product

Caveat: No matter where the visitor is, the homepage should only be only 1 click away!

Sorting Sorts
Some want the cheapest, some want the best, and some want the latest!
Visitors have all kinds of demands and preferences. So allow them to sort out stuff in every which way possible. You can have options like:
• Price-low to high and vice versa
• Latest additions
• Best selling items
• User rated items

Invert the Pyramid
Follow the inverted pyramid module here and narrow down your categories. For instance if someone is searching for Shoes, then open out sub- categories like Boots/Sandals/ Slippers and so on…
Giving visitors relevant and valuable options are a trigger of to sales.

Caveat: If users get the right thing at the right time, there are more chances of them hitting the ‘buy’ button.

Out of Stock
I can understand and make peace with the ‘out of stock’ message but what gets my nerves is when the message is flashed across when I am done with putting the item in my shopping cart and am at the checkout counter. Trust me, for a customer, there is nothing more frustrating than this.
Make sure you inform them if you have the item in your stock or not before they proceed further.

Say it with Pics!
A picture is worth a thousand words they say. True enough. You can write down the most convincing of texts for your customers but show them great pictures and they’ll be convinced easier.
Get in real life photos, videos reviews and even 3D interfaces to let visitors ‘experience’ the products.

Caveat: Chances of me buying something I have seen is more than something of which I have only heard about!

Trust me.. hiring web development services from a professional company is the best way to go about it.

So, there you are. 5 handy tips to make your e-commerce site do what it is meant to do-SELL!

Happy sales!

Bye for now...

The Recipe For Effective Navigation

Hi,

During one of my recent projects, I ran down some issues on deciding on the navigation method for a website that was being designed by my team.

My client favored a style that I thought would create usability issues and he was not very fond of the style I preferred.
So there we were in a tug of war!

But after a deal of brainstorming sessions I convinced him of the cons of his favorite navigation style and there he was beaming with pleasure when the site was ready and done.

Such cases are commonplace in the world of web designing. With a plate of navigation styles to choose from, it gets a little confusing. However, the best way out is to go for a style that will be in sync with your website.

For the records, let me tell you about the various navigation styles:

“Yahoo-style" Menu
In this type of navigation pathway all the subheading are placed under the main heading and are selectable.

This means that users can see all the sub-directories and are one click closer to the destination. However, the length of the menu makes users scroll down vertically to view the entire menu. And in cases where there are many menu items, this won’t really work well.

Rollover Menu
When the mouse is placed on a menu item, each heading visually changes and provides some textual description of the sub-items. Since this is a one-level menu, there must be a sub-level page that provides links to the sub-topics.

Flash Menu
When the heading is clicked, the menu item opens to show its sub-items, and automatically closes the previously opened menu.

Expand/Collapse Menu
Clicking on a "closed" menu opens it. Likewise, clicking on an "open" menu closes it. Though the menus are not closed automatically like in the case of Flash Menus,”Open All" and "Close All" functionality is provided.

Drop-down Menu
When the mouse is held over, the menus open automatically, with no clicking required. Sub-menu items are selectable.

This kind of navigation pathway makes it very easy for fellow users to find their way around. The sub-categories are visible without having to click or change the page and with web surfers being a lazy lot, less clicks and fewer pages to go through equal more conversions.
There are some negatives about the Drop Down menus if you are not an advanced drop down menu creator. The problem is broken menus, which translate into lost business.

Fly-out Menu
When the mouse is held over, the menu items open automatically and sub-items are selectable.

So there they are. Just a word of advice though. No matter which one you opt for keep the following points in mind:

• Users follow an F-shape patter while going through a website. So      place your navigation bar within the top-left half of your web page.
• Keep the speed and functionality while designing the navigation        pathway. With the chunk of audience having access to high speed    internet connections, the hover buttons, pop-out and drop-down          menus have to be lightning fast.
• Run the website on several browsers and operating systems to        check if it runs smoothly.
• All the links should be underlined and clearly visible.

Make the visitors trip through your website a memorable one, deliver what they are looking for and make them come back for more. A rich user experience translates in to richer sales!

Till next time…

Don’t Make Your Visitors Wait!

In the world of technological advancements, where multi tasking is the buzzword, there is hardly anything that has a singular purpose.
But then again, somethings are better kept from diversifying too much.
Like websites, who try to portray themselves as television network. I see no other reason for them to put top-notch graphics and sounds on to their web pages.
The fact however is that internet users are not watching TV, neither are they keen to. thus hiring web development services becomes essential.

All is fine for users with broadband and high-speed connections, but then again the fact remains that majority of internet audience view websites on a screen that is about 15-19 inches, has only 216 colors and downloads at 28.8 kb per second.
This means that all your efforts that went into putting together that techno graphic or stereophonic sound aren’t even getting to the visitors. Worse, visitors prefer to click away rather than wait for your site to load on to their computer screens.

Now this is a huge problem, especially so if your website is the online face of your business.

The Solution: Make your website under 50K. Or if possible, under 30K.

How on earth you ask me?

For the records let me tell you that most popular websites on the internet are less than 21 K. you heard me right. Yahoo’s homepage is only 20K. Howzzat?
The figures may look a little too small, but trust me you can do a whole lot within that size.

Let me tell you how:

First, make all your graphic images as small as can be. Try to get them under 4k. Set an upper limit of 6K if need be but not more than that.

While designing graphics for your website keep in mind the number of colors that you use. I know from personal experience, this gets a little too difficult going from a million color palette to only 216. But yeah, 216 is the number of colors on a web safe color pallet. And again, use solid colors when designing your image.

The gradient is a popular tool now, courtesy PhotoShop. It’s so good to fade things in and out. The background score done on gradient looks real cool.
Another thing I do is to right click on the images to see its size. The 8k-12k is just not worth the space. The only problem with gradient is dithering, and of course it makes use of far too many colors. Both gorge on time and size.
Remember, more the number of colors you use, bigger the image is going to be!

Use more of designs and less of graphics. A successful web page is one that looks good as well as downloads quickly. But what if they clash?
Looking good vs. Downloading fast?
The answer is using color schemes to make your website look good instead of designing graphics and taking pictures and turning them into JPGs.
Use cell colors to make borders. Use up the negative space on your website. For what is not presents is just as important as what is.

There are times when less s more.
Think of a visitor coming to your website. And ask your self a few questions:
Will the extra graphic push him to buy your product?
Will that prompt him to come back?
Does it arouse his interest?

Is the answer is yes, go ahead, use it!
But if you are wondering on the lines of maybe- might chuck it!

The web is to make life easier and faster. It’s not about waiting till eternity for the web pages to load.

A Marketing Plan For Your Website!

Hi,

So, you thought only your business needs a marketing plan?

Is not your website a part of your business? Then why not a special marketing plan for it?

Your Website Marketing Plan will essentially comprise of developing strategies and tactics focusing on three major objectives.
Let me tell you what…

Define Company Goals for the Website
Just like your business runs on pre defined goals and objectives, you website needs a bit too. Define a broad primary objective for the website and build short-term goals around it.
Like if the prime motive of your website is to provide relevant information on the products and services to your clientele, then you should design lines like
• Provide the arena for sweepstakes or raffles in partnership
• Carry out overall brand advertising campaigns
• Act as a point of sale for certain items
• Generate sales leads
• Build demographic information on customers

Identify Website Marketing Strategies.
When you are done with the goal definition part, come to website designing strategies. Now to define it, you must first identify the. And the identification of website marketing strategies go down two ways:

1) Promotion of the website on the internet
a) How will the existence and advantages of the website be communicated to the customers? Will it be PPC or SEO strategies?
b) What are the traffic goals?
c) What are the desired click-through rates?

2) Changes within the site to keep it attractive to potential visitors
a) through blogs, animations, and viral flash games
b) other technical tactics that’ll incorporate several applications

Budget
Setting a budget is essential if don’t have ‘the sky is the limit’ formula working for you. Take in the big picture and estimate the max.

Your budget should tie each line item to a schedule and act as a responsibility matrix. This will help you anticipate benefits and you can plan to generate the funds for the associated costs.
No matter the liquid state of technical costs, online businesses do need a balanced and detailed budget that weights costs against benefits.

It sure does take a lot of research and time to build a strong website marketing plan but the benefit is a blueprint to online success!

Happy planning!

Bye until next time.

ASP Or PHP - What To Use?

ASP or PHP? What do I use? One of my clients, whom I was providing web design services,  asked me.

There is no clear winner in the duel and which one of the two to use will depend solely on the nature of the website being developed; there is no harm in looking at their merits and demerits…

ASP, Active Server Pages and PHP Hypertext Preprocessor are both popular development tools used by web developers to develop dynamic web sites and applications.

For the records, ASP version 1.0 was developed by Microsoft in 1996 and after subsequent revisions, the latest release is - ASP.NET 3.5.

PHP was developed by the Danish developer, Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995. Just like ASP, PHP has greatly evolved from version 1.0 to its current release of version 5.2.0.

Now let us run down a comparison through various standards:

Platform
• ASP web pages can be stored and run on Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Server) server platform.

• Whereas, PHP web pages are stored and run on a variety of server platforms including the likes of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX and Linux.

Cost Factor
Here is a cost analysis of both of them

For the complete development environment, you will have to shell out some few hundred dollars.
Plus
A service license for the current version of Windows servers will cost you another hundred to thousand dollars, depending on the version you chose.
Plus
A complete version of SQL Server Database would take thousands of dollars more. While SQL Server database is used most commonly by ASP developers, free database solutions, such as MySQL are also available.
Hmm… Quite a price when you add it all up!

And now the modest PHP… it is free software by the Free Software Foundation and can be downloaded at zero cost from The PHP Group.
Plus
Unlike ASP, PHP can be installed on the Linux platform. Linux operating systems are also free softwares that can be downloaded and installed on servers for no cost.
Plus
Most advanced PHP websites and applications connect to a MySQL database, which is again available as free software.

But like ASP, PHP websites configured to run on Windows servers or with a SQL Server databases, require similar Microsoft licenses.

The cost factor sure sways for PHP!
What’s Easy to Use?

Using ASP.NET for object-oriented programmers is a smooth ride. The development interface is clean, intuitive and well implemented. And for seasoned developers, the point and click interface and programming language may present a learning curve.
